Industry is a major player in research
The majority of UK medical research is still supported by the pharmaceutical industry
There are three main sources of medical research and development investment in the UK:
-
The pharmaceutical industry
-
Government agencies
-
And, medical charities
In 2004, the pharmaceutical industry funded more than 60 per cent of all medical research in the UK. Through, the Medical Research Council, higher education, and the NHS, government accounted for around 22 per cent. Medical charities accounted for the last 17 per cent.
As a consequence, the pharmaceutical industry in the UK generates many highly skilled and value-added jobs to support their medical research programmes.
