What is the pharmaceutical industry?

The pharmaceutical industry comprises companies who research, develop, make and market medicines. In the UK many of these companies are members of their Trade Association, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). This site is produced by the ABPI on behalf of our members, to provide information on jobs in the industry.

Pharmaceutical companies employ people with a wide range of educational qualifications - from school leavers with GCSEs taaken on as Apprentices, to researchers with postdoctoral experience. You can see the wide range of jobs in the area 'Working in the Industry'.Many of the jobs are in scientific and engineering areas, but non-scientific jobs range from finance and human resources to sales and marketing.
