Postgraduate study options

Postgraduate Masters – MA and MSc are one year courses which may be taught, or research based.

A PhD comprises a 3 to 4 year research project, carried out in university under the supervision of a university lecturer.

A ‘postdoc’, or postdoctoral fellowship, is a short term research contract based in a university.

Science and Engineering Masters and PhDs are often offered by universities through a partnership between Research Councils – the BBSRC, EPSRC or MRC - and industry. These may be called CASE Studentships or Doctoral Training Awards (DTAs). Universities advertise the studentships they have available.
