Choices at 16
In England and Wales, the range of post-16 qualifications offered by schools and colleges has widened considerably in recent years.
At A level, as well as Physics, Chemistry and Biology, the school/college may offer Applied Science, Psychology, Sports Studies, Health and Social Care and Engineering. Universities are more flexible in the subjects they require for most courses than they used to be, however two 'traditional' science A levels are normally required for entry to science degrees.
A levels are changing in content from September 2008; the changes to Chemistry A level have been summarised by the Royal Society of Chemistry .
In Scotland subjects offered at Intermediate 1 and 2, Higher and Advanced Higher level include Biotechnology at Intermediate 2 and Higher, as well as the standard science subjects at all levels.
If your child knows what they want to do when they leave school it is worth checking, before choices are made, that they are suitable.
For entrance to university in the UK the UCAS website is an essential source of information – with links to all university websites and summary information on the requirements for different courses.
