Choices at 14
There are several subjects, including English, Maths and Science that all students have to study at this age. However the compulsory single science GCSE or Standard grade is not going to be enough for your child to study sciences post-16 and at university.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics are closely related and understanding in all these subjects is necessary if you want to study science at university. Maths is also important and a good maths grade should be aimed for.
In England and Wales two Science GCSEs are considered the minimum qualification for going on to study science subjects at A level, an alternative is to study three separate science GCSEs.
Applied Science GCSEs set each science topic covered in a work related context and concentrate on the knowledge and skills used by scientists in the workplace.
In Scotland choices should be made carefully to ensure that you have the right background for further study in science subjects.
