Pharmacovigilance
Side effects are sometimes only found after a medicine is marketed. Pharmacovigilance is all about monitoring adverse effects and encouraging safe use of medicines.
The safety of medicines is checked, once they are marketed, to identify previously unrecognised adverse effects, or changes in the patterns of adverse effects. The risks and benefits of a medicine will be continuously checked in order to determine what action, if any, is necessary to improve their safe use.
People working in pharmacovigilance provide information to users to encourage safe and effective use of medicines. Some companies employ specialist pharmacovigilance professionals, in others the role is combined with medical information.
