What opportunities are there for me in the pharmaceutical industry if I choose to study for a Masters degree or a Doctorate (PhD)? What do I gain from spending more time studying before entering industry?

If you have completed a Postgraduate Masters degree in science you will probably have done a substantial research project. The practical scientific skills you will have acquired in a university laboratory working on such a project are transferable to laboratories in an industrial setting.

Whilst studying for a PhD you will have developed the skills needed to research and write an original thesis in an innovative field of science. PhD training also enables you to acquire many of the personal and professional skills (such as presenting and effectively communicating scientific ideas) necessary to form the basis of a successful career in research – whether in academia or industry.

However, work experience and exposure to industry during the time at university is the best way to gain a better understanding of how the skills you have gained would fit into an industrial setting. For more information on how, visit the Getting Experience section of the website.
